Competency Profile Project – Update

March 18, 2026

FOMTRAC is excited to share that the selection process for the Development Committee for the Canadian Massage Therapy Competency Framework Modernization Project is now complete. Following a rigorous, transparent, and equity-driven review of over 300 applications, a diverse group of professionals from across Canada has been selected. Onboarding is currently underway. This marks a pivotal step toward modernizing the national competency framework.

Why the Framework Matters

The Framework supports the profession by:

  • Clarifying professional expectations for safe and effective practice
  • Providing a common language for massage therapy knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Supporting education and training program development
  • Informing assessment tools and processes used across the profession
  • Guiding selfassessment and ongoing development for massage therapists
  • Supporting workforce and career planning across practice settings

Why an Update Is Needed

The current Framework was last reviewed in 2016. Regular renewal is essential to ensure it reflects:

  • Healthcare advancements
  • Contemporary professional practice
  • Best practices in competency profiling

How the Update Will Happen

Beginning in January 2026, the Development Committee will initiate work using a proven six-step development model adapted from Batt et al. (2021).

This collaborative and evidence-informed approach will ensure that the renewed Framework remains relevant, credible and reflective of the profession’s national practice evolution.

We extend our sincere thanks to all partner organizations and applicants for their on-going support and look forward to engaging all members of the profession as we shape the future of massage therapy competency standards in Canada.
