Evidence-Informed Competency Framework Development

In this recorded presentation, Dr. Alan Batt provides an in-depth overview of the evidence, methodology, and guiding principles supporting the development of the new competency framework for massage therapy.

Drawing on his extensive research and international experience, Dr. Batt introduces the six-step systems-based model that has been adopted to guide this work. The presentation explains how the model enhances transparency, ensures broad stakeholder engagement, and incorporates contextual factors that reflect the realities of professional massage therapy practice across Canada.

Dr. Batt also discusses common challenges in competency framework development, such as the gap between practice and documentation and how FOMTRAC’s approach addresses these through structured processes, equity considerations, and ongoing evaluation.

The model’s adoption by organizations including the World Health Organization and other health professions illustrates its adaptability and evidence-informed foundation.

This presentation was delivered to provide FOMTRAC stakeholders with insight into the development process, its relevance to the profession, and the roadmap toward an updated, credible, and sustainable competency framework.
